Charnwood Great War Centenary Project initiated a process to explore the potential of commemorating the Zeppelin Raid on Loughborough which occurred on January 31st 1916. Discussions with local people threw up much about the Raid and about how Loughborough looked at the time. Walks around the town, interviews and book based research led to the idea of creating a community play around this fascinating local story that few, particularly younger people, were aware of. Charnwood Arts formed a partnership with Loughborough College, whose former building on Greenclose Lane was damaged by the first bomb. We employed playwright Andy Barrett of Excavate and theatre director Andrew McWilliam of Chorus Theatre to work with us to create a plan to commemorate the event and to share the history through a community play. This took place in May 2016.
