Commemorating Britain’s Declaration of War

The Centenary Project followed up by supporting special events organised by Charnwood Borough Council in August 2014 to commemorate the beginning of the war itself. These activities included a special ceremony at the Carillon on August 4th 2014 and an event in Queen’s Park at which the ubiquitous Tommy Atkin’s band, with their repertoire of World War 1 songs, appeared yet again!

The project involved many performances as a way of engaging people in facets of the local history and to encourage reflection on the wider course and impact of the war. These events, from smaller groups such as the Tommy Atkin’s band up to the involvement of local orchestras and choirs brought together many hundreds of people as participants and audiences.
